Google Earth 1.1 for Android mobile phones now allows you to go deep under the World’s oceans via a new “Explore the Ocean” layer as well as the now standard on land options!
We had already been looking under the sea using the desktop Google Earth version since Google’s partnership announcement with National Geographic last year but to have this cool feature on your Android phone in you pocket is great. Also if you have Android 2.2 (Froyo) on your phone you can even click on the Flash videos that show up in the App to see extra details about the various mountains and canyons lurking beneath the surface.
If you want to check the new Google Earth App for Android point your Android camera at the following QR code or alternatively go to the App Market on your phone.

We are nearly at the end of another busy month for mobile phone sales so we thought we would compile a quick top 10 best selling mobile phones list for August*. We have also put the cheapest contract price we can find for each handset as of 24/08/10 next in the list so you can see at a glance what the cheapest deals are for each of the phones
The main news this month is that we have seen the Samsung Galaxy S overtake the best selling HTC Desire to take number 1 spot. We love both phones here as they are both top of the range Android phones and really make full use of their high powered specifications but Samsung’s HUGE advertising campaign here in the UK finally looks to have helped it to our top spot. Android phones actually make up 50% of our top 10 list in August with Sony Ericsson’s bold move several months ago to to use Android for their smartphones seemingly paying off with the Xperia X10 and Xperia X10 mini phones both selling in high numbers.
The other big selling brand of phones this month as you can see are Blackberry – with the older Bold 9700 and Curve 8520 selling really well which shows there are still a lot of people out there who want old fashioned physical keys and the not so old fashioned bullet proof business functionality BlackBerry built their business on.
Finally, you will see there are best selling mobile phone deals available this month that will actually cost you £0.00 over the length of the 18 month contract (as long as you follow the cashback terms and conditions) with both the feature packed Samsung Tocco Lite and the more basic Nokia 2330 Classic available on these crazy deals!
Top 10 Mobile Phones in August 2010
- Samsung Galaxy S – 600 Mins, 500 Texts, 1GB Internet for £23.33 per month = £420 total cost
- HTC Desire – 100 Mins, 3000 (unlimited) Texts for £20 per month = £360 total cost
- BlackBerry Bold 9700 – 100 Mins, 3000 (unlimited) Texts for £20 per month = £360 total cost
- BlackBerry Curve 8520 – 600 Mins, 3000 (unlimited) Texts for £20 per month = £120 total cost
- Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 – 300 Mins, 3000 (unlimited) Texts for £19.11 per month = £343.93 total cost
- Samsung Tocco Lite – 300 Mins, 300 Texts for £0.00 per month = £0.00 total cost
- Nokia 2330 Classic – 100 Mins, 3000 Texts for £0.00 per month = £0.00 total cost
- Apple iPhone 3GS 8GB – 75 Mins, 250 Texts for £30.00 per month = £659.00 total cost
- Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini Pro – 100 Mins, 3000 Texts for £11.11 per month = £200.00 total cost
- HTC Wildfire Brown – 400 Mins, 3000 Texts for £8.33 per month = £200.00 total cost
* This list is compiled from data collated from many mobile phone comparison sites here in the UK so will be different from individual high street retailers lists.

With the number of Apps available for Google Android mobile phones increasing by crazy numbers every day it seems there is a call by some developers to have the option of getting paid via PayPal in addition to Google’s own Google Checkout payment system.

Some 87 million people are registered with PayPal and linking the App buying process into these tech savvy users seems to make sense to us too. The media giants Bloomberg also think it would help to swell the number of Apps even further:
“By adding PayPal, Google would give app developers another way to get paid, potentially making them more likely to create software for Android .”
What do you think – do you think being able to spend some of your eBay profits on Android Apps would be a good idea?

This is just to let you know that it’s just been confirmed that the new Android 2.2 update will be available this Monday – see our original post here for full details.

If you didn’t hear about the mayhem Vodafone caused when they pushed an official Google Android phone update over the air to their HTC Desire customers then I would go and have a look at the official Vodafone HTC Desire forums but for those who are anxiously awaiting the 2.2 Android update to hopefully remove some of the Vodafone 360 branding it appears that it should be here sometime before or over the weekend according to our sources will be available on Monday 23rd August- see here.
The official line by Tom on the Vodafone forum as of 18th August is:
We’re still developing and testing the Android 2.2 update for HTC Desire and working on its approval with Google and HTC. The start of the roll out is days, not weeks, away and as soon as the date is finalised we’ll let you know.
It’s an absolute priority for Vodafone customers to receive this update as soon as possible and that it works as we promised it would do. The testing process has taken a little longer than we initially anticipated, but we’re working hard to make sure it gives customers the best experience.
The HTC Desire is our phone of choice in the office and from our hands on with Froyo equipped HTC Desires the new features are worth the wait with our favourites being:
- 720p HD video capture
- The new Adobe Flash Player 10.1 allows you to view flash content in your Android Browser either within the web page or full screen. This makes the various BBC news clips completely accessible and also sets Android apart from other smartphones.
- Free up your Desire’s internal memory by moving many Android Apps to the SD card.
- Create your own Wi-Fi hotspots using your mobile phone’s data connection
- The phone feels a lot faster
Got the update?
Let us know if you manage to get the official Vodafone 2.2 update via the comments below and we will tell all of those disgruntled Vodafone Desire owners ASAP that it is live!

We are hearing from multiple sources that the LG Aloha, previously discussed here, will be launching in the UK in September.
We initially thought the Aloha ended up being the new LG Ally, but that doesn’t seem to be the case anymore. We’re now seeing another device passing through the FCC, which indeed may be the “real” Aloha this time. The kicker? The LG Aloha apparently supports AT&T’s 3G network.
While the LG Ally may have some hard-hitting backing from the likes of Verizon and the Iron Man 2 movie, it’s still a mid-ranged smartphone at the end of the day. We’ve been hearing that LG had been working on a Snapdragon Android device for some time now, but that has yet to materialize. The Aloha may indeed be that device, but we’re holding out hope that LG will revise the industrial design of the LG Aloha before it goes live on any US carrier.
I still can’t stand the look of the Aloha. It’s just ugly. Hopefully, when or if it hits AT&T (or somewhere in Canada for that matter) I’m really hoping LG comes to its senses and makes a device that actually looks pretty enough to live up to its supposed specs. We’d welcome any AT&T-inspired design changes. That seems to be harder than it looks, but when you see devices like the EVO, Legend, or Nexus One, we know at least one company can design an Android phone and make them look great. The Ally doesn’t look bad at all, but there’s nothing stand out about it, either.
Rumored Specs of the Aloha:
Android 2.1
1 GHz Snapdragon processor
3.5-inch AMOLED 800×480 touch display
Sliding 4-row QWERTY keyboard
5-megapixel camera
720p HD DivX compatible playback
WiFi, GPS, DMB tuner
With a device that boasts the kind of specs that we believe will be packed into the handset, we’d love to get some hands on time with the device. Despite the looks, the device looks like it may deliver on the performance front, and if it makes it to AT&T at some point in the future, we’ll be sure to put the ugly duckling through it’s paces.
Samsung’s Galaxy S smartphone, which runs the latest version of Google’s Android operating system, is now available to pre-order from Vodafone.
The device, which goes on sale later this month, runs Android 2.1, and gives users access to thousands of apps from the Android Marketplace. It features Samsung’s Social Hub, which collates emails, texts, instant messages and events in to a single, real-time feed to make it easier to stay in touch with friends. It boasts a 4in AMOLED screen and five-megapixel camera, and can shoot high-definition movies.

Customers can place a pre-order for the 16GB device on the Vodafone website. The Galaxy S is free on two-year, £35-per-month contracts, and includes 900 minutes of free calls, unlimited free text messages and monthly data allowance of 1GB.

Photographs of what appears to be the next generation iPhone have surfaced on technology blog Engadget, and evidence is building that they may in fact be genuine.
It’s here, the iPhone 4G is coming to the UK in June apparently and these are the first shots. Thanks to Sam from Top 10 mobile phones for the tip on this.

If you’ll recall, the night before the iPad was revealed, we had leaked shots of the device from what appeared to be an Apple test lab. Upon further inspection of these pictures today, the aforementioned editor discovered that the new iPhone 4G we’ve just gotten photos of is actually sitting on the table beside the iPad prototype! Imagine how blown our minds were when we realized we have had a photo of the next iPhone for months! As you can see in the pic above, the left side of the new device is clearly visible on this table in the upper right hand corner, and since we believe that these photos come directly from an Apple testbed, it’s hard to deny that the phone you’ve just seen is in fact the real deal. Not only that, but we suspect that the device on the tablet itself is also a version of the new phone (you can see what looks like aluminum along the bottom) which seems to be housed in some type of iPhone 3G-like case.
Additionally, a source — who confirms this is the next Apple iPhone — also tells us that the device apparently does have a higher res screen on-board, a front-facing camera, a higher resolution camera with flash, and takes MicroSIM cards (that’s the little “button” around the side you see in the Twitpic which is floating around the internet). We’re working on uncovering more info, but right now you can take a look at the proof above for yourself, and in the gallery below.
